How to compare local moving estimates without missing the important details
A moving estimate should make the scope understandable. Use the same questions for every company so you compare what you receive—not just the largest or smallest number.
What work is included?
Ask whether the estimate includes loading, transportation, unloading, furniture protection, disassembly/reassembly, packing materials, and placement in the new home. Note optional work separately.
What changes the price?
Ask about travel time, stairs, elevators, long carries, access, bulky items, packing, storage, and last-minute changes. Request a clear explanation of when and how additional charges could apply.
What is the arrival and completion plan?
Confirm the arrival window, expected crew size, equipment, and day-of contact. Ask what happens if the crew is delayed or conditions differ from the original description.
What protection is offered?
Ask how furniture and fragile items are protected, what valuation or coverage options are available, and how an issue is documented. Read terms before authorizing the move.
