Packing for a local move: decide what to do yourself and what to discuss with a mover
Packing is not one decision. Break it into ordinary items, fragile belongings, furniture protection, and the small set of essentials that should stay with you.
Choose your level of help
You may pack everything yourself, ask for help only with fragile items, or use a full-packing service. Decide early so each company can explain timing, materials, and what is included.
Label for the destination
Use a clear room name and short description on each box. Mark fragile boxes on more than one side. Keep inventory notes for especially valuable or unusual items.
Do not surprise the crew with specialty items
Tell the mover in advance about items requiring special handling. Include dimensions or photos where useful. This gives the company a chance to confirm its equipment, crew, and policy.
Set aside what travels with you
Keep essential documents, medication, chargers, keys, irreplaceable valuables, and immediate-use items out of the moving truck. Make this plan before loading begins.
